Today is my mother in law's funeral. We've been together for 45 years. I had a good one. She was always kind and supportive of me.

Her daughters and I were there when she passed. She will be missed.

I had the honor of escorting her down the aisle at one of the granddaughter's wedding. The first wedding after my father in law passed away. (Thus my somber expression.)

The day after my daughter's wedding a lot of the family met for breakfast. She was cold so I was pulling her sweater up a little higher. She thought I was trying to "pick at her" when she was talking. While I did pick at her all the time, not this particular morning.

My wife is the eldest daughter. I am the eldest son in law. We were the first to get married. Our daughter is the eldest grandchild. My son the the second grandchild and first grandson. We are the first family.

My in laws were only in their mid 30s when I came on the scene. The sisters were still fairly young. We all grew up together.

I am sure she appreciated having you as a son-in-law.
May she rest in peace.

Thanks. This week was a bit like being under water. Her passing was very peaceful. Beautiful.
I got a hold of the waitress last night and told her that I get the bill. After dinner when the others realized what happened they feigned mock indignity. My comment was I am old but I am quick. On the way home I started to laugh. I told my wife that my best comments are an hour or a day too late. What I would have said was (Using my best Steve Martin voice) HEY! This is MY party. After all I am the one who buried his mother in law! She laughed and said it would have been funny but I missed my chance. Don't tell the sisters that later.
