PackersTalk Over and over this past season we heard that the Badgers' problem was simply that they had no identity. No one really explains what that means — though you can infer that it used to be run the ball and have a good defense (until they play the top spread teams at least). The Packers'...

If feels strange saying this, but Packers are a run heavy team and asking the QB to be a game manager and not make mistakes.
On defense, it depends on what pieces they have to work with, as they seem to be adjusting a bit depending on whom is healthy. But as the article says, inverted cover-2, and cover-3 daring teams to test Xavier McKinney.

It's a thing of beauty seeing the Packers actually run the ball. It's something we have been wanting more of for YEARS - and to few people's surprise, it makes a big difference. I'm sure the defense appreciates these sustained drives too.
The defense has their highs and lows, but it hasn't been a much different approach than what we've seen in recent seasons. They seem to be willing to give up the underneath and over the middle passes, but take away the big plays outside the numbers. If the pass rush were more effective, this approach wouldn't be so frustrating. I will say though, the upgrade at safety has made a big difference in defending the big plays - which has been long overdue.

For the first time in decades, our offense runs off of our RB Jacobs and i love it. One thing i said after Love came back was that Malik was suited for this offense more so than Love because he is a legit dual threat and adds to the running game. If Love were to get injured, i wouldnt be worried one bit.
With that said, Love is playing great football again and hopefully he doesnt make any boneheaded throws like earlier in the year.

What was the 49ers identity in their glory years?
I supposed one could argue it was the "West Coast" Offense,
But IIRC, Roger Craig
and Ricky Waters were 1000 yard rushers.
They had great balanced receiving corps
with Rice, Taylor, Owens, Dwight Clark and Brent Jones.
They had a good solid defense with some very good DB's
But I am not sure "West Coast Offense" is really an identity.
I think they were just a good in a lot of balance, which made htem a great team.
I hope we have the same success, sans an identity.

I don't care if the Packers have an identity other than the Raiders old mantra, "Just win baby".
If they win one week by throwing for 450 yards. Great.
If they win the following week by grinding the ball on the ground for 250 yards. Fantastic.
If they follow it up with a stifling defensive performance. Super.
If they win with heroic ST play such as blocking a FG attempt in the final seconds, Awesome.
If the game hinges on 4 takeaways that stop long long time consuming drives by the other team that should have led to scores, WHOOT!
It doesn't matter how they do it. Just do it. Every game, every opponent is going to be different. The time of day. The temp. The weather. The injuries. Home or away. It is never the same. Why limit them to some simplistic terminology? Let them be adaptive not predictive. That was one of the issues with McCarthy's teams in his last years in GB. Everyone knew what he wanted to do.

Martha Careful;468109What was the 49ers identity in their glory years?
49ers offensive identity was short passing game where they would slant you to death. And if you started shading inside, they would pass it to the RB as their pseudo "running" game. The identity was heavy on yards after catch.

I think this is a good recipe for success. Ground and pound. OL prefers to run block because they do the attacking where as pass blocking they are reacting to the attack. And if you keep your defense on the field, they are better rested, and if their defense is on the field they get tired.
And if you need a TD you got a helluva QB who can sling it to a handful of really good WR's and also a TE who is a monster.
