Know your competition this week.

The Oakland Raiders.

When founded in 1960, there was a "name the team" contest and it was held by the news paper "The Oakland Tribune" The winning name was the "Oakland Señors"

After massive objection by the public, and weeks upon weeks of being the butt of local jokes, the team (and its multiple owners) changed the team's name nine days later to the Oakland Raiders, which had finished third in the naming contest. The original team colors were black, gold and white. (The Saints Stole Those Colors)

The greatest team logo (IMHO) of a pirate (or "Raider") wearing a football helmet was created, from a rendition of actor Randolph Scott from a 1945 film "Dead Men Tell There Tales."

Prediction for Sunday.....

It will be the exact same score as Super Bowl II January 14, 1968.

Packers 33
Raiders 14.

Arizona and Denver are both playing games at the same time as the GB/OAK game. My guess is their home team games take precedent.

I've always felt Oakland Raiders > Los Angeles Raiders.
I hope they stay in Oakland.

They're staying in Oakland.
You should have seen what it was like when they left Oakland.
I remember those days vividly.

Nobody's gonna make that mistake again.

I remember the Oakland Tribune vividly.
I used to sell that paper door to door as a teenager.

Nice perk about that job was I got the paper for free.
No, it wasn't a good paper.
But when one thinks of "Sports Page," in the SF area, the Oakland Tribune kicked everyone's ass.

Then the USA Today came out and they had color pictures.
Big freaking deal.
They still couldn't write worth a damn and didn't really know sports.
The Oakland Tribune on the other hand knew sports.

Then of course, the papers started dying because of the internet.
Still, I'll always have a soft spot for that newspaper.

I had no idea that the Raiders were named because of a contest in the Tribune.
That deserves a slapnuts.
Heh.
Glad that the original name didn't stick.
