My guess is this, the Pack plays a lot of 6 DBs. If you do that you have to cover but still stop the run. So my take is they want cover safeties to be able to do that and also use them to blitz. I gotta believe TT and Dom have a plan. At least that is my hope. I also hope we get an ILB that can contribute this year.

Bob McGinn had him going at #20 to the Eagles. Mike Mayock of NFL.com had him at #20 to the Eagles as well.

I think the reason they wanted this guy is that, when the ball is in the air, he can make a play on it.

You know there's guys, like Jarrett Bush for example.
They know the defense, they have the physical tools.
They are IN position, but they don't make the play.
That is because they cannot adjust to the ball on the fly.

We just got the best guy in the draft at doing that.

And let's not forget, there's a TON of guys still there!
I've got about 15 guys I still like, and we're only 30 picks away.

If Ted is able to address the hole in coverage in the middle that is typically LB, I will feel better about this pick.

Given that Gregory and, especially, Goldman were available, I wouldn't have gone with a S/CB conversion.

And given who was available at #30, I would rather have seen Ted trade down, but maybe there was no one buying.

IMO, everyone available at #30 was a second round pick (Gregory because of character more than talent, but even there there are questions).
And so whether it was Randall or someone else, my reaction would have been pretty much the same.

"Ok."

This staff doesn't CARE about the run.
They are trying to BAIT other teams into getting away from the passing game.

I don't see how he can be considered such a major reach when 1.) Ted Thompson apparently thinks he was lucky to get him at 30, 2.) multiple mock drafts had him projected earlier than 30 or not much after it. Here's what Walter Football had to say:

Walter FootballPick 38: Washington Redskins: Damarious Randall, S, Arizona State

The Redskins obviously need to make multiple upgrades to their woeful secondary. Help is needed at both corner and safety, so Washington can take the best player available at either position.

So at least a few prominent mock drafts have him going #20, and another thinks he would have been the best available player at 38. Doesn't seem like much of a reach to me. Based on what I'm seeing, he was easily in the mix at that point, and the Packers thought he was the best option.

Anyone mention that he is a return guy also?

As far as ILB goes, most are still available and are projected as mid to late 2nds and 3rd RND picks.
