Sorry wpr, I just caught this thread.
You definitely had a tough one. God's speed to your son as goes in harms way. My prayers go with him.
And a belated "Happy 50th"!
Welcome to the club, although I am getting mighty close to pushing the big six-oh.

Acorns do not fall far from the tree.
When your son comes home, some of those tears in dad's eyes will be ours.
As impossible as it seems, you will be as proud of him then as you are now.
My most sincere prayers for you and yours, sir.

I know you are scared for your son.....I don't blame you.
But you also must be VERY proud of him!
I don't even know him, and i'm proud of him!

Thank you Cheesey.
I know what you mean however, for the record, I have to say that I am not afraid for him.
I can not guarantee his safety here in the States.
(He was in the building next door when the shootings took place at NIU last year.
His sister was walking to the building where the shootings took place at the very moment it occurred.)
I have long since turned over the responsibility of watching over my children to the Lord.
He does a better job than I could ever do.
I am concerned for him but not fearful.
He will come home.
I am certain of it.
I do miss him.
I wish he didn't have to put his life on hold for a year.
By the time he gets back he will have missed at least 2 full years of college maybe more.
He has a young lady who has let him know that if he were to propose, her answer is "Yes".
I wish he didn't have to face the hardships that are ahead of him.
But this is something he and I have talked about since he was 16 and thinking about joining the National Guard.
He is 22 now or will be in 6 weeks.

Thats good!
The Lord knows whats best for them anyway. And you are SOOO right. There is no safe place today. With all the crime in today's world, theres no guarentee of safety anywhere on this earth.

wpr....my thoughts and prayers are with your son and your family.
Our next door neighbor's husband is on his third tour as a civilian heavy equipment driver over there. He doesn't have to be there, but as a veteran of Vietnam, he said this is the least I can do to help. We all pray for him every day and will now include your son in our prayers.
May God look over your son and protect him and all those that are serving everywhere around this world.
