I'm naive on this rule, but how was Phillip Rivers able to fumble the ball, pick it up while on BOTH knees and pass the ball? I thought if you have two knees down, you are down, end of play?

The rule you are referencing here is for back who is rushing and gives himself up to a tackler.
Rivers was not rushing on that play -- indeed, he had fumbled the ball -- so I don't think it applies there.
A quarterback is legally allowed to pass from his knees, I believe.[boxing]

If touched he would have been down, they must have ruled that he hadn't been touched? You would think Woodson slapping the ball out would count as being touched though.

He has to be down as a result of contact with an opposing player... he did go down but it was not as a direct result of contact with Woodson.

Then when he did drop to both knees, no opposing player touched him to rule the play over. So he was perfectly within his right to throw the ball since the play was still alive.

I guess I read the rules wrong when they said 1 knee = down, regardless of being contacted. It's not the first time I didn't understand a rule.

some great plays.
some serious errors in coverage.
some bad calls by the refs.
all in all a win.

just saw a different replay on the williams pick six.
Rivers missed someone wide open deep down middle on the play.

on the one hand it was a sweet play.
But hidden underneath is the same problem that showed itself all game, and has done so all year.
bad pass defense getting covered up by big flashy plays.

agreed.
I love the ints but i would rather have a shut down defense that consistently puts the ball back in A R hand after 3-5 plays.

Normally, it's the offense that goes into a lull this time of year.
This year for once it's the defense.
But they're still playing enough to win.
I'll bet you all a shot of whiskey they hit their stride for the playoffs.
